Girl & The Goat: The West Loop Night Out That Never Got Old
More than a decade after opening, this Randolph Street icon still feels like the hottest party on Restaurant Row. The room hums, plates land in waves, cocktails disappear, and somewhere behind the long open kitchen a celebrity chef may well be tasting your dinner. Some restaurants age; this one just gets more magnetic.
The Concept
Stephanie Izard — the first woman to take the Top Chef title — bet on Randolph Street back in 2010, when the West Loop was more loading docks than linen napkins. Her idea was simple: bold global flavors, served family-style, with guests treated like family. The neighborhood grew up around her.
What to Order
Ask any Chicagoan: the green beans with fish-sauce vinaigrette and cashews are non-negotiable, even for people who swear they never order vegetables. Beyond that, graze across goat empanadas, the sticky glazed pork shank, and whichever seasonal plates the kitchen is riffing on that week — the menu changes constantly, which is half the fun. Inventive cocktails and locally rooted beers keep pace.
The Space
Burnt-cedar walls, reclaimed wood and low warm light give the room its “rustic with a bit of badass” character, in Izard’s own words. It is convivial and unapologetically loud — the kind of place where neighboring tables end up comparing orders and the open kitchen provides the floor show.
