The Dearborn: The Loop’s Most Handsome Living Room
Some downtown restaurants feel like pit stops between errands; The Dearborn feels like the reason you came downtown in the first place. Set among the theaters, museums and shops of the Loop, it is the rare big-city tavern where the light is flattering, the booths are deep, and nobody hurries you out the door.
Irish Hospitality, Chicago Address
Sisters Amy and Clodagh Lawless grew up in Ireland’s pub culture and spent years in Chicago hospitality before opening their own place in Block Thirty Seven in 2016. Warmth is the house specialty here; chef Aaron Cuschieri’s Midwestern menu is how it gets served.
What to Order
On weekends the move is brunch: fried chicken with waffles, pork carnitas chilaquiles, and beignets with Nutella sauce that arrive pillowy and hot. Come evening, start with burrata and heirloom tomatoes or the Midwest Is Best salad, then settle into the Dearborn Burger with Wisconsin cheddar or shrimp and grits with creole butter. The Basque-style cheesecake is the gentle landing.
The Space
Murals of old Chicago, subway tile, tufted booths and glowing vintage lamps give the room a nostalgic polish, while huge windows put the Loop’s street theater on permanent display. Sunday brunch comes with live jazz; summer brings a lovely patio along Washington Street.
Who It’s For
Date nights before a show, birthday brunches with friends, catch-up dinners with visiting parents, and solo suppers at the bar when downtown feels like it belongs to you alone.
Good to Know
What’s the dress code? None — theatergoers in blazers sit next to shoppers in sneakers.
What makes Sunday special? The jazz brunch: live music, warm beignets and a slow morning done properly.
Is there private dining? Yes, the restaurant hosts private events and group dinners.
How do I get there by transit? The Blue Line lets you out practically at the door, inside Block Thirty Seven at Washington.
Is it kid-friendly? Very — pizzas and the relaxed tavern setting work well for families, especially at brunch.

I found a real classy American burger at The Dearborn — with a farm Angus beef patty and Wisconsin cheddar ($22). I got chatting with the server. She told me her dream is to be a film editor. Besides the cheeseburger, Th…
