Alla Vita: Dinner Under a Ceiling of Greenery
Some restaurants feed you; Alla Vita stages you. Curtains ripple overhead, plants cascade from every beam, string lights blur into the wine glasses — and in the middle of it all lands a chicken parmigiana that could make a Sunday nonna weep. This is the West Loop’s most theatrical way to eat Italian.
From the Boka Family
Alla Vita belongs to Boka Restaurant Group, the Chicago hospitality house behind Girl & the Goat and Cabra. Chef Lee Wolen — a many-time James Beard finalist — opened it in autumn 2021 on Randolph Street’s restaurant row, in the space that once held Bellemore, trading tasting-menu formality for the Italian food people actually crave on a Tuesday.
What to Order
The chicken parmigiana is the celebrity: crisp breading that somehow stays crunchy under its blanket of fire-roasted marinara. The mushroom lasagna layers wild-mushroom bolognese with fontina until the top caramelizes, and the arancini hide smoky scamorza at their core. Pizza loyalists should try the Brussels sprouts and pancetta pie, and nobody leaves without a spoon duel over the tiramisu.
The Space
A vast, humming room that feels like a garden built inside a theater — a pergola draped in greenery on one side, rows of flowing ceiling curtains on the other, and a bar long enough to host a small parade. The scale swallows crowds gracefully, though the energy stays firmly festive rather than hushed.
Who It’s For
Date nights that need a wow factor, birthday dinners for eight, visiting parents you want to impress, and post-work groups drifting over from Fulton Market offices.
Good to Know
Do they host private events? Yes — there are private dining options, and the room’s scale handles big parties gracefully.
Is there outdoor seating? A patio runs through the warm months and takes walk-ins — often the easiest way in on busy nights.
Is it kid-friendly? Early evenings, absolutely — pizza and buttery pasta are easy wins; later hours skew adult.
How loud does it get? Lively — if conversation is the priority, ask for the pergola side or come right at opening.
How do I get there without a car? It’s a short walk from Ogilvie and Union Station, and taxis on Randolph Street are constant.

Alla Vita was the first restaurant we visited after arriving home from Rome last spring… and somehow the experience didn't end at the airport. The flavours, the music and the warm atmosphere were as if Italy had followed…
My dinner tonight at Alla Vita was wonderful! I went during Restaurant Week and chose from the regular menu. I expected smaller portions but left completely satisfied. The main pasta dish was a good size. For a first cou…

We came on a Monday and booked ahead to sit outside. In the warm season they have a cute patio. When that patio is closed, you can still enjoy the beautifully designed and chic interior. We were seated quickly and starte…
