River Roast: Golden Hour on the Chicago River
Some evenings ask for a table by the water — boats sliding under the LaSalle Street bridge, a cold drink in hand, and a dinner that unhurriedly turns into night. River Roast calls itself a social house, and that is exactly how it behaves: loud enough to feel alive, generous enough to keep everyone at the table happy.
The Concept
Housed in the historic Reid Murdoch Building since 2014, River Roast was dreamed up for Levy Restaurants by acclaimed chef Tony Mantuano around a nostalgic idea — the old-fashioned Sunday supper, where a big roast lands in the middle of the table and conversation does the rest.
What to Order
Let the carving trolley set the tone: slow-roasted beef sliced at your elbow, a whole roasted fish for the table, or the famous wood-smoked chicken with its crackling skin. Add shareable sides, a round of craft cocktails or a local draft, and dessert becomes a group decision.
The Space
Two levels of exposed brick and river light, with a waterside patio that fills at sunset and live blues rolling through on Saturdays and Sundays. Downstairs hums like a lively tavern; upstairs and the terrace feel made for lingering.
Who It’s For
Sunset dates, weekend brunch crews, family celebrations where three generations need to agree, and out-of-town guests you want to quietly impress with a skyline view.
Good to Know
How do I get a patio table? Patio seats are first-come, first-served in season — come early on warm evenings, especially Fridays.
Is there bar seating? Yes, the bar welcomes walk-ins and is a great solo or pre-dinner perch with a river view.
Is it kid-friendly? Very — the shared-roast format was practically invented for family tables, and early hours are calmer.
How do I get there without a car? It is a short walk from the Clark/Lake L hub and right off the Riverwalk; valet and nearby garages cover drivers.
Anything for lighter appetites? Salads, fish and vegetable sides balance the roasts, and staff handle dietary requests gracefully.
