STK Chicago: A Night Out Disguised as Dinner
Some evenings call for more than a good meal — they call for an entrance. At STK in River North, dinner comes with a DJ, mood lighting and a room that hums like a lounge, which is exactly why half of Chicago books it for birthdays, promotions and every excuse in between.
The Concept
The brand made its name in New York by fusing a chic cocktail lounge with a serious chophouse, then took the formula global — Las Vegas, London, Miami and beyond. Chicago’s edition sits a block off the river among River North’s galleries and nightlife, styling itself as the anti-stuffy alternative to the city’s old-guard steak institutions: same quality beef, entirely different pulse.
What to Order
Ease in with a seafood tower and a round of bold cocktails while the room warms up. The filet done Oscar-style — crab and béarnaise — is the elegant move; the twenty-ounce bone-in rib steak is the statement one. Wagyu sliders and spicy broccolini keep the table sharing, and the finale is pure theater: a chocolate sphere that collapses over white chocolate mousse.
The Space
The dining room reads glamour before the first course arrives — plush curved booths arranged so you can people-watch across the room, a sculptural white ceiling installation rippling overhead, black lacquer details and fresh white florals. As the evening deepens, the DJ turns the volume from dinner to party.
Who It’s For
Celebration tables, girls’ nights, pre-club dinners and couples who prefer their romance with a beat. If your ideal steakhouse is silent and wood-panelled, this is its stylish opposite.
Good to Know
How loud does it get? Lively — the DJ plays through evening service, and the energy peaks on weekends. Come early for a calmer table.
Can I just sit at the bar? Yes, the bar and lounge take walk-ins and serve the full menu — a good plan-B on busy nights.
Is there private dining? Semi-private and buyout options exist for groups; the team arranges events from birthdays to corporate parties.
What about Sunday? A high-energy Sunday brunch pairs steakhouse dishes with brunch classics and cocktails.
How do I get there? It sits steps from the Merchandise Mart and Grand Red Line stop; valet and nearby garages cover drivers.
