Walk in and the city outside simply stops: color rises four stories overhead, a Latin beat rolls off the stage, and hundreds of people seem to be celebrating hundreds of different things at once. Carnivale isn’t a restaurant with entertainment — it’s a nightly festival that happens to serve serious Latin food.

Two Decades of Spectacle

Restaurateur-designer Jerry Kleiner — the man who gave Chicago Red Light, Marche, Gioco and Opera — opened Carnivale in 2004 on the western edge of the West Loop, and the restaurant recently toasted its twentieth anniversary. In a district where concepts turn over yearly, two decades of packed dance floors speaks for itself.

What to Order

Graze through the ceviches, share the bacon-wrapped chuleta and let the table divide an Argentinian grilled-meat platter slicked with chimichurri. The ropa vieja is the sleeper hit — slow-cooked, deeply savory Cuban comfort — and the arroz con mariscos brings the coastline to the table. Pitchers of sangria and rounds of caipirinhas are practically mandatory.

The Space

Day-glo walls, cheeky gallery photography, a soaring atrium, balcony tables for surveying the beautiful chaos and a curved bar suspended over the Kennedy Expressway. Kleiner’s design is now twenty-something years old and still makes first-timers grin at the door.
