First steps in architecture
Jeanne Gang was born in 1964 in the small town of Belvidere, Illinois. In 1982, Jean graduated from high school in her hometown. In 1986, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1989, she received an Ambassadorial Scholarship from the Rotary Foundation to study at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. She also attended the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Versailles in France. In 1993, the woman received her master’s degree in architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design.
After graduating from Harvard, Gang worked for Rem Koolhaas’ OMA architecture firm for several years, which enhanced her experience. Jeanne soon moved to the United States, where she worked at Booth Hansen Architects before establishing her own architectural company, Studio Gang, in Chicago.
Great success
Thanks to her passion for her craft, Jeanne Gang has become one of the world’s most successful female architects. She is known for many unique architectural projects. Her first significant project was Chicago’s 82-story Aqua Tower, completed in 2010. It was named the world’s tallest building designed by a woman.
Aqua Tower is a multifunctional skyscraper. The wavy contours of the balconies add exceptional elegance to the skyscraper’s profile, while energy-efficient features such as heat-resistant glass and rainwater collection systems aid in fighting large-scale environmental problems.
Despite the fact that the architectural field is dominated by men, Gang has achieved success through her distinctive approach to work. In addition, she quickly rose to the rank of Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Gang’s next outstanding project in her hometown of Chicago was the Vista Tower (now St. Regis Chicago). It’s worth noting that many people regard this tower as an architectural miracle. The one-of-a-kind structure has 101 floors, ranking third tallest in Chicago after the Trump Tower and the Willis Tower.
Gang’s unique style is characterized by unusual, bold, and functional forms for residential and educational buildings. Gang’s ability to balance novelty and practicality in urban areas was shown in the Ford Calumet Environmental Center project. It has an area of 27,000 square feet. The architect employed locally sourced materials, as well as advanced heating and water recovery systems.
Jeanne Gang’s international projects, as a large residential complex in Hyderabad, India, which incorporates traditional construction methods, once again prove that Gang uses an integrated approach to modern construction in her work.
