Cindy was born on February 20, 1966, in the small American city of DeKalb, Illinois. Her family was middle-class: her father worked as an electrician, and her mother was a hospital nurse. Cindy is not the only child, the family also had two girls and a boy. The Crawford family had to go through a great deal of grief when their youngest son, Jeff, died of leukemia. With him, the continuation of the family was cut off, which deeply upset the father. As a result, Cindy never changed her last name, even after she married.

The Crawford children were raised in a warm comfortable environment. The girls were friendly, and each had a distinct talent. In 1984, Cindy graduated with honors from high school, obtained a certificate and enrolled in the Department of Chemistry and Industry at the Northwestern University. Crawford was awarded an academic scholarship for her outstanding academic performance.

The family’s happiness was cut short when the father became seriously ill and passed away. The mother couldn’t feed a large family on her own, so Cindy decided to help and began looking for a part-time job. Once, while picking corn on a farm, the girl accidentally got into a newspaper photo report about the harvest. This photograph eventually got into the hands of legendary photographer Victor Skrebneski. The man suggested that young Cindy try herself in the modeling business. Cindy’s mother, having learned about this, forbade her to go to Chicago, but Cindy chose to go anyway.

The Chicago photo shoot with Skrebneski was successful, after which Cindy was offered a modeling job in Manhattan, which she accepted
