She got involved in sports by a matter of pure chance. Once, the girl stayed late at school and barely made it to the last train home. To catch the train, she had to run headfirst. Her classmates thought she wouldn’t make it, but she got into the train. This scene was witnessed by a school track and field coach, Charles Price. Realizing that the girl had potential in sports, he invited her to come for training.

Soon enough, it became clear that the teacher was not mistaken about his student’s abilities. In a few months, Charles was able to prepare the young athlete for the Olympic Games, which she successfully passed. Betty qualified for the Olympics in Amsterdam, where women athletes were competing for the first time. At that time, Robinson managed to outrun her competitor, Fanny Rosenfeld, in 12.2 seconds. Thus, Betty became the first woman in history to achieve a gold medal in track and field athletics at the Olympics. This victory made her famous.

After coming back to Chicago, she was greeted with full honors, but the athlete was more interested in the next Olympics than in fame. In 1923, she was going to conquer the world at the Olympic Games. However, her plans never came true due to adverse circumstances.

Second birthday

In 1931, Betty traveled to Los Angeles to prepare for the upcoming 1932 Olympic Games. The athlete had no idea what trouble was coming. After finishing her training, Robinson asked her coach to take some time off to meet her cousin, who decided to give her a surprise flight on a biplane. It all happened spontaneously. When the aircraft reached an altitude of 200 meters, the engine failed. The plane started to nosedive into a marshy field near the airfield. Perhaps Betty survived because the plane crashed on a soft surface.

A few hours after the accident, a local resident saw Betty’s mutilated body in the field. Thinking she was dead, he placed her in the trunk of his car and took her to the pathologist. The pathologist determined that she was alive and provided her with urgent medical care. After exhaustive examinations, doctors diagnosed the girl with multiple bone fractures and internal organ damage. The doctors’ prognosis was grim. Robinson was predicted to become disabled for the rest of her life and would no longer be able to continue his career.

However, Betty was not one to give up easily. She was adamant about returning to elite sports. It took about a year for her to recover. After treatment, her left leg was shorter than her right and did not bend well. Therefore, the Olympics in Los Angeles, which she was looking forward to, remained an unattainable dream.

Still, she began training for the Olympics in Berlin, which were to take place in 1936. Her injured leg prevented her from participating in the 100-200 meter dash, but she could still compete in relay races. This was due to the fact that only the first of the 4 participants always started in a seated position. Her great efforts, aspirations and determination helped Betty Robinson become part of the US track and field team. In early 1936, she went to Berlin and won a gold medal.

Betty’s strong character and self-confidence allowed her not only to return to professional sports but also made her a well-deserved Olympic champion. Even after retiring, Robinson continued to engage in track and field athletics. In 1977, she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. The great athlete passed away at the age of 87 from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Betty Robinson is a two-time Chicago Olympic champion in the 100-meter dash.
