She had seven siblings. Her father was a miller and a local political leader. He also was a friend of Abraham Lincoln.

Jane had spinal problems from birth, so later, she underwent surgery to fix it. In 1881, Addams graduated from Rockford Female Seminary. However, she could only get her bachelor’s degree in 1882 when the school was accredited as Rockford College.

Over the next 6 years, the woman began studying medicine but had to abandon her studies due to deteriorating health. It took her nearly 2 years to recover. During this period, she spent a lot of time in hospitals and often traveled.

Creation of Hull House

During her second trip to Europe, 17-year-old Jane, together with a friend, visited the Toynbee Hall charitable organization in East End, London. She immediately thought of opening a similar organization in one of the poor districts of Chicago. She and her friend Ellen Starr rented a small house built by Charles Hull and moved there in 1889.

In this house, Addams and Starr delivered speeches regarding the needs of the community, raised funds, persuaded women from wealthy families to help others, cared for children and looked after the sick.

By the second year, Hull-House was hosting 2000 people weekly. Kindergarten classes were held here in the morning, club meetings for older kids in the afternoon and groups for adults in the evening.

The art gallery was the first facility to open at Hull-House, followed by a kitchen, a coffee shop, a gymnasium and a swimming pool.

As the organization gained popularity, Addams took on more civic duties. In 1905, she was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education and soon headed the School Management Committee.

In 1909, Addams became the first female president of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections.

Helping everyone

In her Chicago area, Jane oversaw various issues, including midwifery, drug use and milk supplies. She even agreed to serve as a garbage inspector for the 12th ward.

In 1910, she received the first honorary degree ever awarded to a woman by Yale University.

As for her beliefs, Jane Addams was an ardent feminist. In the days when women were not entitled to vote, she believed that they should have full rights to voice their opinions in legislation. Addams also emphasized that every woman, regardless of age, should try to improve her life and find ways to fulfill her own desires.

In 1915, Addams became the leader of the Women’s Peace Party. Four months later, she chaired the International Congress of Women, which was held in The Hague and initiated by the Dutch suffragist Aletta Jacobs.

This congress soon started an organization called the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, which Adams led until 1929.

She publicly spoke out against America’s involvement in the war. She faced criticism after each of her speeches, but this did not stop her because she wanted to save the world from war.

In 1926, Jane suffered a heart attack. Unfortunately, she was unable to fully recover. In December 1931, she was given the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. In 1935, this great woman passed away.

Jane Addams was a person who significantly contributed to upholding the interests and rights of women.
