Il Porcellino: Sinatra, Negronis and Old-School Charm
There’s a moment at Il Porcellino — Sinatra crooning, a Negroni sweating on the bar, a basket of garlic bread hitting the table — when River North’s glassy bustle fades and you could be sitting in any great Italian-American dining room of the past half century. That time-machine effect is the whole point.
A Melman Family Trattoria
This is Lettuce Entertain You at its most personal: R.J., Jerrod and Molly Melman opened the “little pig” in 2015 as their tribute to classic Italian-American hospitality, and the restaurant recently toasted its tenth anniversary — an eternity in River North years, and the best proof that the formula holds.
What to Order
Ease in with the caprese salad and a Caprese Negroni, the house’s cheeky signature built on mozzarella-infused gin and tomato-infused Campari. The meatballs are the comfort benchmark, chicken cacciatore tastes like a family recipe, and the pappardelle makes the case for pasta at every table. A glass of house Chianti keeps the mood honest; the Mezcal Negroni Sour is there for the adventurous.
The Space
An easygoing trattoria that glows after dark — wooden tables, a lively bar, vintage swing and Sinatra setting the tempo, and a coveted patio for watching Hubbard Street go by. The noise level lands at cheerful, not chaotic.
Who It’s For
Second dates that need warmth rather than spectacle, visiting parents, pre-show dinners and groups who want red sauce and retro cocktails without a hint of attitude.
Good to Know
What should I wear? Anything from jeans to a blazer — it’s a neighborhood place with downtown polish.
Good for kids? Very — pasta, meatballs and early hours make it one of River North’s easier family dinners.
Can I book a private event? Yes, the restaurant hosts private gatherings and offers catering for offsite occasions.
When is it quietest? Right at opening in the late afternoon or after the main dinner wave; peak buzz hits mid-evening on weekends.
Is there outdoor seating? A seasonal patio operates in the warmer months and is beloved at golden hour — arrive early to snag it.
